Before whitening your teeth, it is important to know how the process works so you do it wisely. Some over the counter products, such as whitening toothpaste and mouthwash, can actually do more long-term harm than good. These products can contain abrasive ingredients, which appear to remove stains on your teeth. Unfortunately, some of these coarse materials actually wear down the white enamel and then expose the yellow dentin underneath the enamel surface. If used often and long-term, you could actually end up getting yellow teeth faster! Teeth whitening is a treatment that uses a type of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide which penetrates the outer layer of the teeth to whiten the debris and minerals in the tubules of the teeth, thereby making them whiter.

The various methods of teeth whitening have evolved over the past thirty years and now we have safe and effective techniques that can be used to make your teeth whiter without damaging them. In addition to that, we have special formulations that even allow people with sensitive teeth to whiten their teeth. We will create custom whitening trays that fit perfectly in your mouth. In the comfort of your own home, you simply apply the whitening gel solution to the tray and slip into your mouth for a few minutes. After two weeks, you will have long-lasting and noticeable results that last for months, even years! If you are a heavy smoker or consumer of red wine and coffee, you can simply get gel refills and touch up your results more frequently.

Teeth whitening can offer a simple and quick way to brighten your smile in a relatively inexpensive and non-invasive way. Our trusted dental team can give you the best options and guide you on which techniques might be best. Patients who have thin enamel or chipped teeth might want to consider porcelain veneers as a stronger option for a whiter smile.

Don’t let a yellow or dull smile hold you back any longer. Feel confident making the best first impression with beautiful, white teeth. In just a few sessions, you’ll notice a long-lasting whiter smile right away!

Five Things You Should Know About Teeth Whitening.

  • 1. WHAT IS CAUSING MY TEETH TO DARKEN?
Teeth naturally darken slightly with age, but thankfully don’t have to stay this way. Food and drinks are the most common culprit that accelerate the darkening process. There are many food and drinks that contain chemicals in them that can contribute to teeth stain including wine, coffee, certain nuts, and berries. Smoking and some medications have also been known to contribute to discolouration of the teeth. Avoiding these foods and habits can help, but rinsing with water and regular brushing and flossing will probably be more realistic and still makes a difference in keeping your teeth whiter. In some instances, trauma to a tooth can cause it to discolour over time. These types of situations may require a more focused effort to lighten them.
  • 2. WHAT SIMPLE ALTERNATIVES ARE THERE TO TEETH WHITENING?
Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is a great start to preserving a white smile. Keeping up with regular professional dental cleanings is a great way to improve your smile overall. A good test is to limit those foods that might stain a white shirt if spilled on it. If you use an abrasive toothpaste, you should be careful not to use it long-term or even every day. If the teeth whitened up easily from these over the counter whitening products, it only makes sense that they might darken just as easily with another cup of coffee. The results from these techniques are short-lived and the best way is to get professional whitening.
  • 3. WHAT ARE SOME COSMETIC OPTIONS THE DENTIST CAN OFFER?
We have access to a variety of new materials today that we didn’t have years ago that lead to whiter, more natural looking smiles. For example, we can offer white composite fillings as opposed to the black (silver) amalgam fillings of the past. Those fillings often leaked into the tubules of the teeth causing deep internal discolourations. In addition, they caused darker shadowing through the enamel of the teeth often making them look a bluish-grey colour. The newer filling materials have proven to hold up well and look extremely natural. If your teeth are rotated, chipped, and discoloured, then ALL-PORCELAIN VENEERS OR CROWNS might be excellent options for you to get a beautiful smile. This new material bonds to the outer surface of the tooth and needs very little removal of tooth structure to place on the tooth leaving you with a “Hollywood Smile.
  • 4. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OPTIONS FOR TAKE-HOME WHITENING?
There are two types of home whitening techniques available: the strips you can purchase over-the-counter and custom professional take-home whitening trays. Because the over-the-counter whitening strips are sold through stores, the concentration of gel is controlled and typically lower, requiring more frequent application and minimal results. At Sheppard Village Dental, we will create custom, clear flexible trays that use a high-grade gel to whiten your teeth safely and effectively. These trays can typically last for a few years when taken care of. In this instance, you can get gel refills and reapply it every six months to a year to maintain the result. These take-home trays offer the convenience of being able to use it at night or during the day. They are removable and portable, and you can use them ongoingly as needed with noticeable results.
  • 5. WHAT IF I HAVE CROWNS OR PLAN ON HAVING DENTAL WORK DONE?
Teeth whitening gels will not whiten porcelain or composite restorations. Therefore, if you are planning on doing extensive dental work, you should consider whitening your teeth first (after you have removed all the decay to avoid sensitivity.) You should wait a couple of weeks and then have the crowns or fillings placed to match the colour of your teeth. If you currently have crowns or fillings on the teeth that are visible when smiling, you might consider having some of them replaced to match the whitened results.
