At Sheppard Village Dental, our goal is to help you keep your teeth for a lifetime. We treat each of our patients as unique cases and will take care to thoroughly assess a tooth for all other solutions before removing it.
Sometimes the only solution is to extract a tooth that is beyond repair and you can rest easy knowing that our doctors will ensure the experience is as positive as possible. At Sheppard Village Dental, we pride ourselves in being able to educate our patients on their options and only resort to extractions as a final solution when nothing else can be done to save a tooth.
What leads to a tooth needing to be extracted?
Taking out a tooth is an irreversible process, so we attempt to save a tooth whenever feasible. If possible, the preferred treatment is a filling or crown to restore badly decayed teeth. If a significant portion of the tooth is missing or broken below the gumline, the tooth may not be able to structurally support a restoration and may need to be extracted. If the root of the tooth fractures, then it may be necessary to remove the tooth. A tooth can also be extracted due to periodontal disease, meaning the infection has led to bone loss, which can now no longer support the tooth. Wisdom teeth extractions are very common and often necessary because they grow in at an angle that makes them difficult to clean, they are non-functional, they will affect the overall bite and interfere with overall alignment, or they have chronic infection from the gum covering the head of the tooth, which does not allow the tooth to fully erupt.
Which conditions make it less safe to extract a tooth?
The most common condition is pregnancy. The second trimester of pregnancy is considered the “safest” time to have dental procedures performed. Patients who are taking blood thinners or have diabetes should also consult their Medical Doctor before having any type of invasive dental procedures. Heavy smoking along with many other factors can affect healing time. To ensure your comfort and safety, our doctors will consult with you before you undergo an extraction.
At Sheppard Village Dental, we pride ourselves in offering local anaesthetic or sedation for our patients who may be anxious or have difficult cases. Sedation allows you to relax during your dental work and may help if you have extensive or complicated treatment to be completed at one time.
